TRUE ALCHEMY - HISTORY, MYTHS AND LEGENDS

Alchemy was based on the possible transmutation of all matter, and was far wider in scope than the familier attempts to turn base metal into gold. It attracted such medieval scholars as Roger Bacon and Albertus Magnus, and was patronized by princes including the 16th c. Emperors Maximilian II and Rudolf II. Alchemy made a considerable, contribution to chemistry which seperated only slowly from it; many leadsing scientists, including Isaac Newton, retained a belief or interest in transmutation.
The rise of mechanical philosophy in the 17th c. and drug therapy in the early 20th c. gradually undermined alchemy and other forms of natural medicine. Later revisionists chose to emphasize alchemy's mystical aspects in esoteric movements such as that of the Rosicrucians.
