ALCHEMY

Alchemy made a considerable, contribution to chemistry which separated only slowly from it; many leading scientists, including Newton, retained a belief or interest in transmutation.
The rise of the mechanical philosophy in the 17th c. and drug therapy in the early 20th c gradually undermined alchemy and other forms of natural medicine. Later revisionists chose to emphasize alchemy's mystical aspects in esoteric movements such as that of the Rosicrucians.
